This is the settee for a speakeasy or a hotel bar with a period interior. The frame is exposed, stained wood: a straight top rail, flared sides that sweep down into carved scroll arm ends, turned front posts and turned front legs.
Inside the frame the back is deep button-tufted red velvet, and the outside of the sides is upholstered in the same fabric. Two loose seat cushions in tan leather sit on a platform finished with a row of brass nailheads along the front rail. The rear view shows a flat velvet back panel framed in wood, so the settee can stand away from a wall.
Construction
- Solid hardwood show frame, carved and turned, with a stain finish
- Hardwood inner frame, sinuous springs and HR foam seat cushions
- Velvet back and sides; leather or vinyl seat cushions, which take the most wear
- Brass-tone nailheads along the frame edges
Why the high back
At about 45 in (114 cm) the back is tall enough to give two guests some privacy, much like a booth, while the settee stays freestanding. Two settees facing each other across a small table make an instant snug.
